Overview

Architecture and operation of the cloud estate supporting the business platform — approximately ten interconnected environments spanning compute, data, storage, edge and security services, run as one coherent ecosystem rather than a collection of servers.

Challenge

Infrastructure that grows organically tends to accumulate environments faster than it accumulates structure. The work was to bring a distributed estate under a single architectural model — consistent security posture, predictable operations, clear boundaries between environments — while holding availability high enough that the business never has to think about it.

Role

Architecture and operational ownership across cloud infrastructure, edge configuration and infrastructure security.

Architecture

    Compute

    Application workloads distributed across environments sized to their role, with separation between production and non-production.

    Data & Storage

    Managed relational data services and object storage, with access restricted by policy rather than by convention.

  3. 03

    Edge & Network

    Edge services in front of the platform providing caching, traffic control and protective filtering.

  4. 04

    Security Layer

    Network boundaries, access control and hardening applied consistently across environments.

  5. 05

    Monitoring

    Availability and performance monitoring across the estate, feeding operational response.

Solution

Security

  • Environment boundaries enforced at the network layer.
  • Least-privilege access applied to infrastructure and data services.
  • Storage and database services configured against public exposure.

Outcome

  • 99.99% platform availability sustained across the estate.
  • Technology cost reduced while organisational capability and the team were retained.
  • Infrastructure operable as one ecosystem rather than ten separate concerns.

Lessons

  • Availability is mostly the absence of surprises — the architecture that produces it is unglamorous by design.
  • Cost optimisation and capability are not opposites; the trade is usually against complexity, not against people.
  • Consistency across environments is worth more than optimality in any one of them.
